Importance of hearing education for the deaf child
Weiskirchen, April 29, 2001
BIAP recommends giving priority to hearing education in the care of the deaf child.
BIAP is particularly concerned about certain practices, which reduce to a simple sound impregnation the care of the hearing-impaired child with even more effective hearing aid including cochlear implant.
However good the hearing correction, BIAP must repeat that hearing impairment persists with all its implications and requirements.
Hearing education should be a part
of multidisciplinary care, attending to all the speech therapy and psychological
aspects of language development at the same time as the medical and prosthetic
aspects.
These aspects will be developed
in a future recommendation.
The progression of hearing education should take into account the individual child’s communication and oral language development plan as defined in collaboration with the family and entourage (BIAP rec.25.1. and 25.2 - parental guidance).
Hearing education must be subject
to regular assessment.
